Mirror Pond Renovation

BE A PART OF THE FUTURE

DONATE TO MIRROR POND RENOVATION

Mirror Pond has been a permanent part of the geology of Manito Park even before it was a park.  Originally, it was much larger and known a Mirror Lake, at least during part of the year, extending to what is now Grand Boulevard.  Early pictures of Manito show people ice skating on it.  You may have fondly called it the “Duck Pond.”  Renovation is now needed because over the years the duck population has grown dramatically and there are water quality issues.

How can you help?

Design for the renovation of Mirror Pond was funded by $50,000 grant from The Friends of Manito (TFM) in 2007.  This master plan is now complete and shows progress in four phases:

-The first phase covers installing a pump, equipment to add dissolved oxygen to the water, a pond water level control device, and connecting pipes.  Water savings will be accomplished by recycling pond water and shutting down supplemental city water when evaporated water is replaced rather than having the excess flow into the storm sewer system.

-The second phase covers shoreline renovation and landscaping.
-Phases three and four add water features on the north and south hills.

The goals of the entire design are to stabilize the pond edge, create a paved path loop around the pond, add emergent plants and other shoreline vegetation to improve aquatic, wildlife habitat, improve the health and clarity of the pond water, create natural appearing waterfalls and improve the aesthetics of the landscape.
