Aquatic Programs

The City of Spokane Parks & Recreation Department’s Aquatics Division operates six municipal swimming facilities throughout the Spokane area. We offer a variety of programs designed for youth and adults. The Aquatics Division offers American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim programs for youth as well as Water Exercise, Lifeguard Training, Junior Guard, and various other programs to help you keep cool, active and entertained during the hot summer months. American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Classes

The new American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim classes provide instruction to help swimmers of all ages and abilities develop their swimming and water safety skills. It is designed to give students a positive learning experience. Learn-to-Swim teaches aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. The objective is to teach people to swim and to be safe in, on and around the water.

The six learn-to-swim levels and the objectives for each level include:

Level 1
Introduction to Water Skills: helps students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely.

Level 2
Fundamental Aquatic Skills: gives students success with fundamental skills.

Level 3
Stroke Development: builds on the skills in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice.

Level 4
Stroke Improvement: develops confidence in the strokes learned and to improve other aquatic skills.

Level 5
Stroke Refinement: provides further coordination and refinement of strokes.

Level 6
Swimming and Skill Proficiency: refines the strokes so students swim them with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances.

Adult/Teen Lessons

These lessons are offered to Adults and Teenagers of all swimming backgrounds and are designed to teach the fundamentals of swimming. You are never to old to learn how to swim. If you want to be in a group learning environment with people your own age, this is the class for you. These lessons are designed to get you acquainted or reacquainted with the water, brush up on your skills, and learn some new ones. The course is geared towards beginners and is taught in a small group format..

Parent/Child Lessons

Parent/Child swim lessons are offered for children ages 6-36 months old. A parent must accompany the child in the water. This program is intended to obtain comfort in the water as well as to provide the parent with the necessary knowledge and skills to orient the child to the water.

Water Workout (Water Exercise)

Get ready to get moving. This is a 55-minute aerobic exercise class held in both shallow and deep water; you get to decide. The beauty of this class is that you have the control on how deep and how hard you work. Water is one of the best places to exercise due to the buoyancy, resistance, and other properties water provides. Walk-ins are welcome.

Novice Swim Team

The Spokane Parks & Recreation Department’s Swim Team (AQUADUCKS) will run for 8 weeks beginning on Monday, July 6th, 2009. This program is designed to introduce and orient youth to the competitive environment of a swim team. Youth should have prior swimming experience and be comfortable in the water.
